In celebration of Earth Month, come engage in and learn about the climate advocacy and justice work that Duke Climate Coalition been involved in this year, including our campaign and (recently passed!) referendum on endowment transparency, research and education on energy markets in North Carolina with the @utilityfairnessnow campaign, and work with local energy nonprofit @ncwarn in encouraging Governor Josh Stein towards taking bold climate action — because best way to celebrate is by taking action.

DCC LOVES Rachel Carson Council! 🌎

This week, DCC joined students from dozens of other universities from across the country at Rachel Carson Council’s annual Advocacy Week! Between enjoying the beautiful cherry blossoms and sights of Washington DC, our amazing group of 15 Duke students lobbied and visited the congressional offices of over thirty legislators to pay homage to the extraordinary work done by Rachel Carson herself. We are so grateful to have been able to join such a brilliant, passionate group of activists, students, and individuals to defend the communities and natural world we hold so dear.

We’ll see you next spring! 🌸

DSG voted unanimously to move the motion forward — and now, we need your help getting 1,000 signatures to demonstrate student support for the motion and officially place it on the ballot!

How can we map the “pillars of support” upholding institutions and think strategically about which ones to target and work with? Despite claiming to be a leading climate university, Duke invests up to $200 MILLION DIRECTLY IN FOSSIL FUELS! Fossil fuels are the number one anthropogenic cause of climate change and are also associated with systemic environmental justice issues. Additionally, Duke is classified as a “charitable institution”, meaning that they have an obligation under UPMIFA to act according to public interests: Duke Climate Coalition has been pushing for the divestment of fossil fuels for over 10 years (since 2015 and earlier) and despite widespread student support for divestment AND universities with prestige-akin to Duke already divesting, Duke’s Board of Trustees has made no motion towards divesting from the harmful industry of fossil fuels.

Additionally, Duke is classified as a “charitable institution”, meaning that they have an obligation under UPMIFA to act according to public interests: Duke Climate Coalition has been pushing for the divestment of fossil fuels for over 10 years (since 2015 and earlier) and despite widespread student support for divestment AND universities with prestige-akin to Duke already divesting, Duke’s Board of Trustees has made no motion towards divesting from the harmful industry of fossil fuels.

This week, Angela and Ava had the opportunity to spend three days in Philadelphia as Campus Climate Network Organizing Fellows with students from across the country leading divestment and political campaigns at their universities. There, they spent valuable time learning about social organizing, campaign strategies, and coalition building.

In times like these, organizations like CCN keep students hopeful and connected to the movement and each other. Immeasurable gratitude to the amazing facilitators that helped make this experience so memorable and to Campus Climate Network for making such a retreat possible!

This past year, the Energy Market Reform Project filed 3 bills in the North Carolina state legislature aimed at restructuring the current monopoly-utility system in the state! After hours of research, meeting state representatives, and sending countless emails, enjoy this crash course of a year’s work compressed into 9 slides!

HUGE shoutout to the awesome project managers and leads that allowed this project to get off the ground and accomplish some pretty amazing things! We’re super excited to see where the Energy Market Reform project will go next year! Project openings will be available in the fall, so stay tuned for updates!
