Lobbying for Energy Market Reform
North Carolina's energy market is heavily monopolized by big polluters, like Duke Energy, a state-regulated monopoly.
This means consumers have no choice where to purchase electricity from. In 2022, Duke Energy was responsible for 96% of NC’s utility-supplied electricity.

NC Utilities Commission (NCUC), responsible for regulating utilities, is also the party that reinforces Duke’s monopoly.

Legislative Menu of Options
This past year, we have begun compile research into a comprehensive menu of options analyzing the feasibility and impacts of various possible energy market reforms.

This report provides the foundation of the three bills we have filed in the NC state legislature. We aim to publish this report in the coming year.

Lobbying
We aim to build long-lasting, close relationships with legislators and those with the decision-making power to shape North Carolina's energy future for the better.

Together, members of Duke Climate Coalition, Sunrise Durham, the Energy and Climate Club, Duke's Nicholas Institute, and more began to form some of those relationships, traveling to Raleigh to meet with our sponsors, pitch our bills to other legislators, and garner support for the No Toxic Money Pledge.
